We wanted to pick a name that defined the community’s area of work within the Santiam Canyon in Western Oregon. Because of the centrality of water in the area, we eventually settled on the name “Santiam River Catholic Worker” because it sounded pleasant to the ear and because of the particular beauty of the Santiam River region.
